This earthquakes devastation is huge thousands and thousands of people are dead and many are injured. The earthquake crushed buildings and flattened whole towns.   The earthquake occurred in Sichuan just near Chengdu.  Time is a crucial factor because many people are stuck under buildings with no food or water and have been there for days and they may never be found. Armies of specially trained rescue workers and sniffer dogs were brought to help find people buried under the wreckage. Bad weather and cracked roads have made it difficult  to get to the injured people. And there have been lots of after shocks which are like  mini earthquakes after the big earthquake that cause more devastation. The government has had to make more stricter building rules making the people put steel rods in to the building to make the  buildings more resistant. By putting steel rods in the  buildings. When the buildings sways the steel rods will help it hold together.   The government is  under a of pressure to  make building regulations better after this earthquake because of the little number of buildings that withstand-ed the earthquake which has  forced the government to investigate the building regulations. Australia has offered to help china with rescue workers at the ready to help if they are needed. The long term affects on theses people are their friends and family a house may get crushed but you can always build another one but when a person dies u can never replace them. The short term affects on these people  some   have no shelter over their head with no food or water and grieving over their loved ones.

On the 12th of May 2008 a devastating earthquake hit china apparently hitting around 7.9 in magnitude and destroying roads, toppling buildings and burying people in their own homes and cutting off electricity and communication. The disaster happened in the province of Sichuan near Chengdu in China yet could be felt within a radius of 3000 kilometres. Rescue workers have been using sniffer dogs and have also sticking small video cameras through the cracks of rubble to see if there is anyone their and see if they can help pull them out. The problem is that broken roads and no electricity or communications makes it awfully hard to reach the injured and near dead. At the end of the big earthquake their were a number of smaller ones called aftershocks, even though they are smaller they still cause a lot of damage by knocking over the buildings that were just left standing.
What they do to make the houses stronger is they put steel in the concrete to reinforce it and in places like Australia they have laws about how you can build your house and how earthquake and other natural disaster proof it really is, but the thing with these laws in Australia is that we are not exactly earthquake prone because it is right in the middle of a tectonic plate on the earths crust so while the plate moves Australia isn’t harmed because it moves with it but China’s not so lucky because it is right on the crack between two plates which rub together to make earthquakes.
Australia has offered to help China by sending in rescue workers to help clear the rubble but the victims of the earthquake and the people who have lost family, friends or even a home are going to really suffer because they have to go through all the emotional pain or having to rebuild their home after the destruction of the earthquake.

Rob Stewert wants sharks to be seen as flying in a 3 dimensional world with graceful dragons. Rob Stewert says if the myth is true that sharks eat humans then the ocean would be terrifying. A marine sanctuary is a place where marine animals can not be captured by fisherman and can breed. Rob Stewert found that there were illegal fishing lines and about 200 sharks dead. Shark finning is where they take off the fin of a shark and sell it is a big business because in China the Read the rest of this entry »

If you think of a shark you would probably think of a terrifying man eating creature but there is one person who thinks a lot different he is called Rob Stewart and sees sharks as the gentle dragons of the sea. He is trying to stop people thinking that sharks go around trying to kill people like in movies such as jaws, and make them believe that they are nice creatures.
Now he is making a movie about sharks and when he went to a marine sanctuary which is there to protect animals he found heaps of shark dead caught up in fishing lines and when he went to china he found hundreds of shark fins on roofs drying getting ready to be cooked into a shark fin soup which cost $400 per bowl. So he is disgraced to see thousand of sharks getting killed each year.
Also we shouldn’t be killing the sharks because they are a big help to the ecosystem because they eat the fish and if there is no sharks there would be too much fish and the fish eat the phyoplankton and if there is to not enough phyoplankton there is to much carbon dioxide in the water.
I think sharks are scary because they can be dangerous but they are nice if you are nice to them.

To get that extra one per cent that could mean gold, Aussie Olympians are turning to science. That means every single bit of info they can get out of scientists could make them win the event.

GPS units being used to help hockey players by seing when they slack of and how far they run, so then at training they know how far to push themselves.

Hockey players run 10 km  in a 70-minute game.

It compares to the AFL players because they can only run 10km in 2 hours.

The information gathered helps them to change how they play their sport.

Heat stress is a problem for Aussie athletes because if they reach 40 degrees their heart goes into overdrive.

The normal temperature of the human body is 37 degrees.

The human body responds to an increase of body temperature by going into overdrive.

The capsule thermometre works by getting ingested, then goes through the stomach of an athlete into the intestine. From the intestine it will transmit a frequency based on its temperature so we can read temperature with this monitor here.

Yes I think it’s fair because if  no countries do it technology will go nowhere.

Nargas – that’s the name of the cyclone that’s hit Burma, causing widespread disaster. And to add to the people of Burma’s woes the military government will only allow very few aid agencies in only from nations it trusts.  Asia that’s where Burma’s location is it’s south of Vietnam and Cambodia    Burma’s location is the reason why the cyclone Nargas was so devastating. The buildings in Burma were really bad quality and the people of Burma are very poor. So when the cyclone hit many people’s houses were destroyed.   Many of the challenges the people of Burma are faced with are dirty drinking water and not enough food. Probably the most deadly is disease. Who knows how many disease’s there could be in Burma. Your body can survive with not enough food for around two weeks, where your body can only survive with not drinking enough water for three or four days.  That’s why people in Burma have been dying over food starvation. Very sad.  Aid agencies are groups that give out food and much needed supplies to countries that have either bad social and political wars or violence. Or countries that have had recent natural disasters. Burma’s government is refusing help.  Only now at this date are they letting countries like the US, Australia, UK and Europe in. That’s because it’s a military government and they don’t elect their leaders. It’s the other way round - the leaders elect themselves.  The delay of the aid means more and more Burmese people have to put up with the pain of disease, the passing away of loved ones and much more trauma that people wish they don’t have to put up with.  The Australian government has responded saying it will give millions of dollars to Burma to help rebuild schools, hospitals and churches, you name it. I think the Burmese government will see the pressure it’s under from the media and other governments and its people and start allowing aid in.

A new theme park might start in Victoria if it is built it will be called African safari theme park. Some people don’t want the theme park to proceed because of the animals will have to listen to people screaming all day long and that will hurt there ear’s.
We have zoos so people can comb and look at the different animals.
The theme park is going to be built in Werribee zoo Victoria.
The company is planning on making a theme park
The advantages of a theme park being built at the zoo are that they will make a lot more money and over 7000 people will get jobs.
Werribee open range zoo operates by driving in a bus around the zoo.
Some of the concerns of people against the proposed development are that the animals will be disturbed and get angry.
The government makes the decision about whether the theme park will be built at the zoo.
I think they should make the theme park because they don’t have a big theme park in Melbourne.

The Werribee Open Zoo in Victoria are having a debate over trying to change the Werribee zoo into a theme park as well as zoo but some people don’t think it is right. Yes they will make more money but what about the animals? They won’t get any attention anymore because of all these roller coasters around and they won’t get any peace or quiet.
